Peers Being Peers

Peers Being Peers is a community-first support network built on the belief that lived experience is expertise. Rather than relying on top-down clinical models or transactional service delivery, we create spaces where disabled individuals, neurodivergent folks, and their allies come together to share, navigate, and grow alongside one another. This is not about fixing or managing—this is about walking side-by-side, exchanging practical wisdom, and building resilient community ties that honor autonomy, consent, and mutual care.

🔄 How It Works

Peers Being Peers operates on a flexible, low-threshold model designed to meet people where they are. There are no rigid schedules, enrollment barriers, or credential requirements:

  • Open Listening Circles: Facilitated by trained peer navigators, these sessions create a safe container for sharing challenges, celebrating wins, and co-developing coping strategies. No agenda required—just presence and respect.
  • Peer Mentorship & Buddy Matching: Voluntary one-on-one or small-group pairings based on shared interests, life stages, or specific navigation needs (e.g., healthcare access, workplace accommodations, community integration).
  • Skill-Share Workshops: Peer-led sessions on practical topics like assistive tech troubleshooting, sensory regulation techniques, benefit appeals, and digital accessibility hacks. Knowledge flows horizontally, not hierarchically.
  • Crisis Navigation Hubs: Real-time, confidential support channels for acute moments of overwhelm or transition. Staffed by trained peers and backed by cross-referenced professional resources when consent is given.

🌱 Guiding Principles

Our community operates on five core values that shape every interaction:

  1. Lived Experience First: Those with direct experience lead the conversations, set the tone, and shape the spaces.
  2. Reciprocity Over Rescue: Support is mutual. Everyone gives and receives at their own pace, without expectation of “repayment.”
  3. Consent & Boundaries: Participation is always opt-in, pauseable, and respectful of energy limits. No pressure to perform or explain.
  4. Intersectional Awareness: We honor how disability intersects with race, gender, class, migration status, language, and other identities.
  5. Practical Over Theoretical: We prioritize actionable strategies, shared resources, and community-built solutions over abstract frameworks.

👥 Who It’s For

Peers Being Peers welcomes:

  • Disabled and neurodivergent adults navigating daily life, transitions, or systemic barriers
  • Caregivers and family members seeking peer-led support networks (with clear role boundaries and facilitation guidelines)
  • Allies and allies-to-be who want to learn from lived experience without centering themselves
  • Community workers, educators, and program designers looking to co-create more humane, participatory services

♿ Accessibility & Design

Inclusion is baked into the platform’s architecture, not added as an afterthought:

  • Fully digital-first with local meeting options via MS Teams/Zoom, plus quarterly in-person gatherings in fully accessible venues
  • Session formats offer multiple entry points: audio-only tracks, text-based participation, switch-accessible interfaces, and low-sensory environments
  • All materials provided in plain language, with optional transcripts, captioning, visual summaries, and offline PDF downloads
  • Zero cost to participate; sustained through community grants, local partnerships, and voluntary peer facilitator stipends
